Milnes Vestibuled Saloon SMR #SMR 5

1 september 2017 - Laxey - Snaefell Summit, okolice przystanku Bungalow. Jedzie człowiek tramwajem, podziwia bezkres gór, czuje hulający wiatr i nagle... zatrzymanie. Z głośników puszczono nagraną zapowiedź, że za jakiś czas przejadą tu motocykle i dalej nie pojedziemy. Widoczną drogą wiódł słynny wyścig motocyklowy Isle of Man TT mający 110-letnią tradycję. W celu kontynuacji podróży na szczyt trzeba było przejść przez kładkę nad drogą i przesiąść się do innego wagonu.

Milnes Roofed Toastrack #26

18 june 1976 - Laxey, Isle of Man – MER station. The Manx Electric doesn’t just operate enclosed motor trams – it has open motors, as well as trailers, although they don’t come out in service very often these days. Motor car 26 of 1898 is seen here at Laxey with a crossbench trailer – it will be forming an ‘extra’ short run to Douglas.

Saloon Tram #9

18 june 1976 - Laxey, Isle of Man. Lazey tram station, the junction between the Manx Electric interurban and the Snaefell Mountain Railway (although this isn’t a junction, strictly speaking, as the SMR runs on a 6 inch wider track. There is a short mixed-gauge section here, where SMR trams can be lifted onto 3 feet gauge bogies for transfer to the MER workshops in Douglas). Saloon tram 9 of 1894 with an open ‘toastrack’ trailer is on a Douglas to Ramsey service and trailer 56 is a spare vehicle for use as necessary. This particular trailer was later converted for disabled access.

Milnes Vestibuled Saloon SMR #SMR 1

13 september 1994 - Snaefell mountain, Isle of Man. We saw the Snaefell Mountain Railway once before, in a photo taken at the station it shares with the Manx Electric Railway at Laxey. Here on the mountain summit, car 1 of 1895 waits to descend. The track gauge is 3 feet 6 inches and, yes, it’s a tram, having been built as an extension of the MER line. It isn’t a rack railway either, but a tramway worked by adhesion. The trams are very similar in design to MER cars, but still have the original Hopkinson bow current collectors, which were very soon replaced by trolleys on the MER.

Milnes Winter Saloon #19

21 september 1987 - Laxey, Isle of Man – Dumbells Terrace. MER saloon #19 at speed, crossing the main Laxey to Ramsey road. The third track in the foreground belongs to the Snaefell Mountain Railway, which runs alongside the MER into Laxey station, a short distance behind the photographer. The gauge of the SMR track is actually six inches wider.

Milnes Winter Saloon #19

21 september 1987 - Laxey, Isle of Man. The Manx Electric interurban meets the Snaefell Mountain Railway, another line with tramway characteristics, here at Laxey station. The SMR uses a slightly wider track gauge of 3 feet 6 inches, however, so through running isn’t possible. Note the original Hopkinson bow collectors still used by the SMR for current collection (unlike the MER, which changed to trolley poles soon after opening). Time has stood still here – like nearly all the cars in the SMR fleet, #1 dates from the opening of the line in 1895, whereas MER #19 is a relative youngster (1899).
